Pictured above is Pennsylvania State Representative Brian Sims (D. Phila.) extending a good, old fashioned Philadelphia welcome to Vice-President Mike Pence when he visited the City of Brotherly Love last year. According to the Philly Voice, Sims, who is Pennsylvania’s first openly gay legislator, joined hundreds of others who were protesting “on behalf of the more than 2000 children who have been separated from their parents at the U.S. border with Mexico…Sims — who is frequently outspoken on social media — posted a picture on Facebook of him giving the vice president the middle finger. In the post, he wrote that he wanted to “officially welcome” Pence to the city with the gesture. The post reads:
To be clear, we’re a City of soaring diversity. We believe in the power of all people to live and to contribute: Black, Brown, Queer, Trans, Atheist, Immigrant, we want you and we’ll respect you.
So keep that in mind while you’re here raising money to attack more families, spread more lies, blaspheme with your bible (sic), and maybe even talk to a woman without your wife in the room. We have plenty of them, and they’re pretty much all more powerful and more real than you have ever been.
So … get bent, then get out!
As you can see, Sims wanted all of us to know what a tough guy he is. But it turns out that he was just getting started with his Progressive Avenger act.
Two weeks ago, Sims posted Facebook videos of himself bullying a woman and three children who on separate occasions had the temerity to pray silently in public near Philadelphia’s Planned Parenthood clinic. As you will see, Sims appears to be barely in control as he rages at a lone older woman and three teenage girls.
As I watched these nauseating videos, I wondered if the heroic Sims would have been quite as aggressive had he been confronting able bodied men quietly saying their prayers.
In any event, the whole disgusting spectacle prompted me to submit the below opinion piece to my friends at the Philadelphia Inquirer. Unfortunately, the Inky felt that it had run enough coverage critical of Sims and declined the submission. I appealed the decision by pointing out that the real point of the piece was to pose the question of what, if anything, Philadelphia’s progressive District Attorney – who was elected with the help of a $1,000,000 contribution from George Soros – was going to do about Sims. The unstated but obvious subtext of the piece was whether the District Attorney would do his duty and criminally charge a fellow Democrat office holder who represents Philadelphia’s politically potent gay community.
But the decision rejecting the article stood. So what to do?
We have a rule here at KIG: writing is too hard to let it go to waste. So here is the submission to the Inky. It will give you a taste of what normal people must endure in the Peoples’ Republic of Philadelphia and help explain why so many of them are leaving the city.
BRIAN SIMS – ONE ANGRY GUY
Two weeks ago, State Representative Brian Sims (D. Phila.) posted a video of himself aggressively berating “an old white lady” (his words) who was silently praying the rosary on a public sidewalk near the Planned Parenthood clinic in Center City. In his video, a physically fit and seething Sims towers over the much shorter, frailer and older woman as he angrily tells her that her conduct is “disgusting”, “grotesque”, and “racist”.
As the woman silently turns away while continuing to pray, Sims follows her and orders her not to “hide”.
As he continues to follow and relentlessly bully the woman, she at long last breaks her silence and quietly tells him to “get your camera out of my face.” But Sims keeps his cell phone on her and continues his tirade.
Sims also posted another video in which he directed his anger and vitriol at a woman and three teenage girls who had been praying in a public area near the clinic. He calls them “pseudo-Christian protesters” and, in regard to the young girls, says, “I’ve got $100 to anyone who will identify any of these three.”
So why did Sims want to know the identities of these girls? And why did he request that information in their presence? Wasn’t the clear implication that he wanted to “dox” them by publishing their names and addresses? Was he trying to place the girls in fear of being doxxed or, even worse, hoping that, if doxxed, they would be harassed or harmed by others?
After viewing the video of Sims’ confrontation of the “old white lady”, John Morganelli, the Democratic District Attorney of Northampton County, Tweeted the following:
I am Pennsylvania’s most senior District Attorney and I believe that Pennsylvania State Representative Brian Sims should be criminally charged with the crime of Harassment for his outrageous harassment of an elderly woman who was praying peacefully exercising her constitutional right of free speech. Sim’s (sic) conduct was not only outrageous but it violated the criminal law of Pennsylvania. Hopefully the DA of the jurisdiction where this occurred will agree that the rights of our citizens to peacefully protest must be protected and the bully – Sims- should be charged.
I share and endorse Morganelli’s opinion and have the same concerns regarding Sims’ threats and bullying in a public place of the three girls.
Thanks to Sims’ videos, the facts are straightforward and not in dispute. Similarly, the legal issues are simple, clear cut and readily resolved.
So, what is Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner going to do about State Representative Brian Sims? And when is he going to do it?
